The other thing is that before you publish a book (either through amazon as an ebook or through createspace as a physical book), go to the U.S. government's electronic copyright office and register your copyrighted work. If you do it before you submit for publication you can submit the file electronically and the registration fee is only $35 (and if somebody saw it and stole it, it is pretty much a legal slam dunk if you have the copyright registered before it is published). That just makes it easier to know that you could theoretically profit from this some day and they send you your official paperwork indicating that your work is registered in the Library of Congress. (sounds impressive, eh?) Even if you never made a dime off of it, that's cheaper than getting a star named after you... |

The fee is more if you don't do it online, but if you register your copyright online (and when your book either hasn't been published or has only been published in electronic form) then the fee is $35 and you just upload a word doc instead of having to send a physical copy of the book.
