Laurajean,
For your hard water stains, you might try what I did some years ago when we had a place with that problem. It was a temporary residence, and had been let go WAY too long. I covered the bottom of the shower with paper towels, then saturated the towels with full strength vinegar. I let it stand for about an hour, then the marks scrubbed easily away with a scratchie or brush (I don't remember what I scrubbed with, but I remembered it was easy : )

Anna, thanks for this tip! It worked wonders! I got a LOT of stuff cleaned up that I thought would just be there permanently, as we have tried EVERYTHING! I am doing a second application right now....going to let it soak all day. Then scrub it down with my brush and a little bit of baking soda (that always makes things fun....I love to hear it sizzle and fizz when it hits the vinegar-soaked shower floor! )

One thing I have done differently. I used regular bath towels instead of paper towels. I used the ones that needed washing first, then added more to the stack if needed. This does two things....1) I don't waste a roll of paper towels and 2) It is good for my towels and washing machine as it helps to get rid of detergent residue in both of them.

Wonderful! So glad to hear it's working for you!

I used paper (and didn't think of anything else) because we were traveling and in a temporary residence when I did it. When you're in an established home and need an all-day-soak, then you're right - old towels are a GREAT idea : ) I

Okay, I'm so glad I seen this thread. We used to have very hard water. We had to replace all of our appliances in a remodel due to horrible stains. We had purchased a really expensive water filter for the house. Even still, a few time that let the minerals get through. Finally the county bought in city water. Not that we wanted that but it has helped keep things here so much cleaner. My shower is a stand up shower and it's a fiberglass sort of material. I much prefer the porcelain. I did keep one tub in one of our bathrooms because I couldn't find them new. But the shower has indentions I suppose to keep you from slipping? And you just can't scrub it with SOS pads or anything like that.

I'm going to try the pure vinegar thing first and then look into the other natural cleaner. Who would have ever known how simple these things could be.

Thanks ladies!

Jenleigh, this worked amazingly well! I also have a fiberglass, stand-up shower. The bottom of it looked awful. We have tried cleaning it with everything on the market!

I did the vinegar treatment and scrubbed it with a bristle brush and it was amazing. I had to do two treatments, it was so bad. I used some baking soda to use as an abrasive with a sponge that has a scrubbing pad on one side. It is amazing. I keep going in there and looking at it. It looks like a new shower!!!

So I just lay down my towels and soak them in pure vinegar all day then scrub and repeat if necessary? Does it matter if you use white or apple cider with this?

Yes. I just put down a couple layers of towels (I pulled the towels out of the dirty laundry and used those first!), then poured a gallon of white vinegar over the towels and soaked them. I also stopped up the drain before I put the towels in place. I used white vinegar. I don't know if white is better than apple cider or not. They both might work.

Anyway. I let it soak for a long time - may 5 or 6 hours - I just walked away and got busy with other stuff. I scrubbed it with a brush and I was amazed at how much stuff came off! This shower was SO bad that I had to do one more application. But I just can't believe the results. It looks like a new shower! :D My dh has NEVER cared for vinegar at all and would fuss whenever I used it for cleaning. But now he is sold on it 100% and wants to use it for everything!

I do run apple cider vinegar (2 cups) through the rinse cycle of my dishwasher (along with any glass ware that is spotty) and it cleans the glasses and the dishwasher. The dishes always come out cleaner after this treatment. I would think that either type of viinegar would work in the shower, but I just used the white.

I wonder if it would help to pour white vinegar in the back of the tank of toilets? We have some deposit build up from hard water-not too bad because we have remodeled and replaced everything in the bathrooms and kitchens but some build up has still accumulated.

Jen, I think that would mess up the parts in the tanks and may do more harm than good.

Basically most liquid soaps will cut grease period.
Especially shampoo. I use it to clean the bath tub and the bathroom sink, with the mr clean white sponge.
