Post subject:  Depression stories

In the "What would you like to do" thread, Martha said she was interested in Depression Stories.

Thought maybe we could share some here.

I remember a story my Paternal Grandfather told. Not really much of a story, but remarkable because it was such a significant event to HIM that he remembered to relate it to me 50 years later. Grandpa was a sharecropper & blacksmith who also worked in a feedstoore from time to time. He had 5 kids. During the depression, he made $7. a week. (this was a time when a teenage domestic servant I know of with no kids was making $10 a week - just to put that in perspective).

One day as he was walking to work, he spotted a few potatoes (two handsful) by the side of the road. He was delighted, because his family would have an adequate dinner that night, with the addition of the potatoes. But, for whatever reason, he could not take them to work with him. So, he looked and found a place near a bridge where he could hide the potatoes till he returned from work. Well, when he came back, he searched & searched, but the potatoes were GONE! He was devastated. He remembered how devastated he had been - 50 years later!

I also heard that my father was called "Bean" by the kids at school because his Mom made him mashed bean sandwiches for lunch most days.

Anyone else have depression stories for Martha? : )
