I think he should have called for back-up sooner, preferably a female cop, and I bet the lady would have gotten out of the car. At her age, she could have been confused, especially if she had a bladder infection like she said. Yes, he can ask for her ID and insurance, but seriously, was she such a threat that he should drag her from the car? If additional cops had come, she would probably have seen things more clearly. She didn't curse at him (at least that I heard,) and she wasn't nasty. She just had her mind made up and was being stubborn -- and that's what leads me to believe that she was confused. Nobody in her right mind would refuse so simple a request especially if she needed to go to the bathroom and showing her license was between her and the toilet. ;0)

All he had to say, was, "Mam, I'm afraid you're going to have to use the bathroom in your vehicle, unless, I see some I.D." Period.

HE DID NOT HAVE TO DRAG HER OUT OF THAT CAR AND CUFF HER IN THAT SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME, JUST BECAUSE HE COULD!

You'd think he'd have some people skills, some psychology training, , some evaluation skills, or some kind of methodology, to diffuse a situation like that.

Nope, all he used was his power and authority to literally drag her to jail.
Great crime fighting skills there, officer.

It stinks and it's stupid, and it was an over reaction, and a power struggle and NO judge would keep her in jail.

He was just going to show her, a thing or two.

It is so hard to know the whole story though from just the short clip. The press edits as they see fit to make a story as interesting as possible. There is no telling what else might have happened that wasn't shown.

I have to admit that I long for the days of Andy Griffith type cops. We had those where we used to live. One day as I was coming home with the kids, one of them asked me a question of a se*ual nature -- nothing weird, just a normal medium-sized kid question, but I DEFINITELY wasn't prepared for it. So I was concentrating very hard on a good answer. Next thing you know, the blue lights were in my rear view mirror. I was in my own neighborhood (which was a town of 300 homes), about 6 houses from mine. The cop asked for my ID and I handed it to him. He said, "You ran that stop sign back there."
I said, "Really? I did?"
He said, "YES, you didn't even see it???" Now, of course, I LIVED there so I knew there was a stop sign, but I was so dumbfounded by ds's question that I hadn't even noticed it. LOL.
The cop just handed me back my license and said, "OH GO ON HOME."
LOL!

If she was confused, I'm glad she was taken off the street.

He actually seemed calm to me and he did diffuse the situation. He realized talking wasn't getting anywhere and did what cops are supposed to do. I don't know of any situation where a cop is going to pull someone over and then let them talk to him like that and defy the law and not use force if he has to. Call me crazy, but I always thought resisting arrest = the police using force. She had the opportunity to get out herself and refused. Personally, I would rather avoid making the cop use force, but clearly this lady wants money and I could tell she did it on purpose.

Hopefully, she learned something from it. The cop was very calm and reasonable to me. He was not trying to be macho and asert his power. But of course, her age will automatically make some people resort to that portrayal. He was doing his job. Her behavior was appalling. "Wait until I go to the bathroom?" I would pee on my seat before I made such a ridiculous request to a cop after already breaking the law. Completely disrespectful. And it was obviously a lie.

I think he should have called for back up as soon as she said she had a medical condition instead of letting it escalate. It clearly shows the woman with wide-eyed, wide mouth astonishment of confusion. He would not l i s t e n to her complaint, this is not a smart mouthed teenager this is an elderly woman. This stop could have ended differently if the cop would have followed some common sense procedures.

Well, I think the result of this may be that the lady is no longer driving after this. Seriously, I wonder if she even realized it was a cop. She definitely seemed out in left field.

I will have to watch it a third time. She didn't seem confused to me, especially when she told him to go ahead and arrest her. Something will probably come out that will shed more light on it all. It's easy to say what he *should* have done because we're not cops. His station did say he acted appropriately and followed protocol, so that's what matters.

Upon watching it again, I do think he should have called for backup sooner, though I don't know the protocol on that.

They are supposed to be "PEACE OFFICERS", NOT GESTAPO!!!!

Yes, she was being feisty, but REALLY, dragging her out of her car and throwing her in jail!!!! REALLY???????

I don't think I'd be very proud of the man if he were my husband or son.

She was not listening to him, or ignoreing him and thinking what she had to say and do was more important. Plus she did not have her seat belt on either. Relisten to what she is saying.

I agree with you, a lot of people don't realize it but an infection can make people not behave normally at all, and some times people will even have hallucinations.
