There has been a random serial killer in the city where my sister lives. They have caught and indicted who they believe is responsible. His parents are refusing to talk to the investigators and are being held in contempt. The cops want to know about their son's developmental history, background, mode of transportation, state of mind, etc.
Frankly, if it was my son, I would not want to do that, sounds like the cops are fishing for info. I believe they can get all that without involving his parents. Their son IS an adult and can speak for himself.
What good would it do to lock up his parents?

If the son lives at home i think that makes them responsible to know what's going on. Otherwise, i totally agree with you!

These aren't the cops - he's been indicted by a Grand Jury. This is the court system - and the parents have been subpoenaed to testify in court.
There are precious few testimonial privileges, (https://www.hg.org/article.asp?id=34496) and parental has never been one of them at American law (as far as I know).
Should it be? I don't know. It would certainly be a major legal overhaul. And, I don't think the question arises very often.

It just seems like they have to overly scrutinize everything ad nauseum. The guy went nuts. Period. Pestering his parents isn't going to change anything. I see locking them up as an abuse of power. The sheriff is justifiably angry but it seems justice has to go beyond the perpetrator being prosecuted, they want anyone who had anything to do with this kid destroyed, too. Like the way the media hounded the family of the Vegas shooter.

I couldn't agree more about the PRESS scrutinizing everything ad nauseum. I'm sick to death of the so called "Me too" movement, and the press' handling of it.
But, this guy is still on trial (unlike the Vegas shooter, who is deceased). Apparently the man has not confessed, or been proven guilty yet. And I think the issue is the court system - not the press here.
