Now you not only need permission, but also need an escort to see your child in school.

I have seen everything now. I would feel like they were holding my kid hostage if my kid attended that school. What happened to Civil Liberties?

When choosing a nursing home for the elderly, they say the best way to find a good one, where your loved one won't be abused or neglected, is to drop in unannounced & unexpected.

Who sees to it the kids aren't mistreated?

Thanks for posting this, Tory.

I agree. I think it's very wrong on all fronts. Parents are usually busy and I don't see many just dropping in unanounced, but IF a parent needed to see their child.. why the hoops to jump through?? something is fishy.
Also.. this makes me wonder because it's the Emergency Management doing this... aren't they the same ones doing those "drills" that remove entire schools full of students and ship them to "undisclosed locations" to be held as long as they see fit???

That's crazy! But even without that policy, you can't just drop in to your kids classroom unannounced anyways. When ds was in school, if I went to the school, I had to stop by the office and sign in and if I needed my son for an appt or something, they went and brought him to me. If I needed to drop something off for him, they took it to him. There was no just going back to his classroom, so there was not dropping in unannounced to see what he was doing. I think that is a normal policy, though.

This school's taking it too far, though. I would find a way to get my kid out of that school.

I do remember having to sign in at the office. That makes sense. They need to know who is there and really can't have people just dropping in at all hours, it would disrupt school too much.
I also think they are carrying it too far. Twenty four hour notice?? Then have an escort??
Are they going to stand there and listen in on the conversation the parent has with the child?
It would seem so.

I guarantee that school system is having a problem with certain parents wanting to spend all day with their kids at school. However, they should have taken the rifle approach instead of the shotgun approach and told those parents that they needed to leave their kids alone. Our society has forgotten the interpersonal skills of gentle confrontation and discussion. If the principal had sat down and explained that the parents were disrupting their kids' learning processes or whatever, I'm sure they could have come to an understanding.

On a different note, the high school here looks like a PRISON! I visited to give info about the Sea Cadets, and I got the creeps. It sits way back off the road with a big retention pond in front of it. So I drove in the long drive, past tall fences with barbed wire and a GUARD SHACK (for real!) to get in. That retention pond looked more like a moat to me! Sheez! So I mentioned this to one of the candidates running for superintendent and said my kids wondered if the kids in the school ever had the urge to jump the fence and make a run for it. He got the strangest look on his face and said, "Well, those fences are meant to keep people out, not in." You could have fooled me!

My first impulse was that they had a few problem parents. But the article said it was recommended by the state version of FE MA (if I understood correctly). So, that makes it look like possibly part of a bigger plan - at least state wide.

The disturbing thing is that when this starts in one school, it is shocking. But pretty soon, it becomes the norm, and everyone accepts it.

And, Martha, the school with the moat and guard shack does sound like a prison! In fact, we have a local prison, and the security there isn't as good in places as what you describe!

Well at Meadow's school I am welcome to sign myself in at the front and proceed to find my daughter. I'm welcome everywhere, the classroom, the lunch room. We live in a small community. We still have prayer in school. Our high school has a Praise and Worship Team. I would not allow my child to attend school with rules like that. That is sad.
