All I know of her is what is in wiki. She is a proponent of school choice, vouchers.

I've heard people say it's no surprise Trump would pick her because of her being so strong on charter schools, but I also hear a lot of people say she is pro common core. I don't know, I like a lot of his picks so far, and I'm waiting and seeing, with the others. I'm a liitle tired of all the people nit-picking everything he does, when it's pretty much the same as every president and he's not even in office yet. But did you hear about Ben Carson being in charge of HUD? I think that's great! He's spoken out a lot, about what needs to be done to help the inner cities.

Just what I wanted to see in our next Secretary of Education!

President of the American Federation of Teachers, Randi Weingarten says:
“The president-elect, in his selection of Betsy DeVos, has chosen the most ideological, anti-public education nominee put forward since President Carter created a Cabinet-level Department of Education.

“In nominating DeVos, Trump makes it loud and clear that his education policy will focus on privatizing, defunding and destroying public education in America."

I've heard they want to get rid of the US Department of Education!!!!

YESSS!   I don't care if they get rid of the common core CURRICULUM but i think they should think over the test situation. I have not really heard anything bad about common core except for trying to make everyone walk lock-step thru their education experience.

LOL, I like that the teachers' union is against her.

Charter schools are GOOD. They give people choices.

Common Core is nothing new. It's a national curriculum, and so was "No Child Left Behind." A national curriculum allows the federal government to dictate what everyone learns -- allowing them to teach even more propaganda. It's NOT GOOD.

I don't think it's necessarily "bad" to have a common curriculum as a standard (math, science, English). The philosophical courses like social studies, science (ahem!), English.... Ok. I see. Besides math it seems all subjects are now philosophical!

Nope, they have managed to marry mathematics and the social sciences:

So it's all bad.

The latest in education is that writing should be in every subject -- even math. So, if you are teaching writing in math, when will you teach math? Having a national curriculum doesn't take into account regional/state/local issues. For example, maybe an area has many families whose parents are engineers (like working for NASA.) Obviously, the parents are going to want the kids to have a stronger math program than a national curriculum that makes everyone the same. On the other hand, rural or inner city kids whose parents have little to no education can't possibly expect their kids to be reading at the same level as a kid who was read to daily before kindergarten.
