That was interesting. It doesn't surprise me that France went up in atheists. The country is having a massive Christian vs. Muslim cultural battle, and that is bound to turn people off to religion.

I thought the most interesting statement was that as economic prosperity goes up, religion goes down. Certainly something for America and American Christians to think about. I am certainly guilty of spending more time with God when things in my household--economic or otherwise--are difficult. Sad but true. I should pray to have more hardships, as that is the period in my life when I spend more concentrated time with the God who has given me all my wealth!

Well, that is the downward spiral that was in the cycle of judges and the cycle of Kings. The people followed God, God blessed them, prosperity made folks think they didn't need God, they turned away from God, he withheld his blessings, they got in trouble, turned back to God, the cycle began anew.

This is one of the many purposes of periodic self-denial for Christians (Such as Lent, Fasting, solitude, silence and other disciplines)
I cannot remember the exact quote, or which Saint said it (perhaps St. Theophan the Recluse), but he said that Spiritual growth comes from denial- whether internally or externally imposed.
If God gives us too much, we always have the option of chosing to forego some of the excess on our own (not easy, granted - I'm not particularly good at it myself, but we can look to the example of those who have gone before and been very successful)
