The law outlaws intentional infliction of pain. Those supporting the law say it wouldn't ban spanking - except abusive spanking. And, maybe sometimes people would be prosecuted for spanking, they can't be sure. . .

Look over this list of unacceptable parental discipline in Arkansas and see if any of it seems...odd.

http://www.stoparchildabuse.com/discipline.htm

When we were kids, kids occasionally got slapped by their parents for talking back, using foul language, biting, spitting, or other offenses involving the inappropriate use of the mouth. According to the state of Arkansas, that's child abuse. Pinching or biting a child is not abusive, but a light slap on the face would be. Does anybody else see that as out of touch?

I think the law in TX is, as long as you don't kill your kid, you're good. At least, that's how I read it. Of course, that doesn't mean anything because judges can do whatever they want. A TX judge took a woman's kids away from her over a simple spanking. Nothing abusive, just a (probably well deserved) spanking and he told her "This is the 21st century. You don't spank anymore. You just don't!" and her kids were taken away. Even though spanking is perfectly legal in TX.

I was slapped a couple times as a teenager and boy, did I deserve it! It was not abuse. If it's a little kid, I could see it as abuse, depending on how hard the slap is, but you have to use common sense. I haven't slapped my kids, I'm just saying.
