Wonder if we're breaking the law with our Sunday night small groups/Bible studies that meet in people's homes. This persecution has to be stopped.

Email campaigns can put on a lot of pressure. I just emailed the Mayor & City Council - encourage others to do the same.

Thank you for posting that. I thought about it, too, but hadn't gotten around to looking up the info yet. I will definitely be sending emails.

I got a pretty nice email back from the Mayor. He says the story had some facts wrong. The family is not being charged $250 a day for this. The issue is a sign issue in their yard, and they are not being fined while the case is being reviewed. They were previously fined on another offense, one having to do with incorporating at that address.

Will update further if I find out more.

But they can put whatever they want in their yard. Isn't it still a violation of their rights to say they can't have a sign that says "prayer" on it in there yard.

So, they are not being charged with the zoning violation for having the Bible study? That really changes the story!

According to the Mayor, the issue is the sign - and not even what is on it, just the fact of the sign. Only a couple of types of signs are permitted, and theirs doesn't fit the rules.

They are reviewing the law to make sure it's okay. It's a 30 year old law. ( and the Supreme Court has had a bit to say about free speech & yard signs in that time - he didn't say that, but just an aside)

I think its pretty decent of him to take the time to field emails from strangers.

He seemed to be a religious man himself, from his comments.

Well, I'm glad that seems to be the only issue. Still wrong, but much better than how the story sounded in the news. Thank you for updating on it.
