I before E – Except when your foreign neighbor Keith receives eight counterfeit beige sleighs from feisty caffeinated weight lifters.

(of course, to be fair, very few of these words are actually exceptions to the WHOLE rule: I before E except after C, or when sounded as A as in “neighbor” and “sleigh.” People always forget the second half. But still fun to read : )

I know a guy named Kieth. His mom must've known the rule. ;) I also know a Shiela! LOL

Good grief, that's still a lot of exceptions! Are we sure there are more words that follow the rule than breaks it? Or just the most common words follow the rule? :geek:

It's not SO many exceptions.

In the example, These are exceptions:
foreign Keith counterfeit feisty caffeinated

These follow the rule:
neighbor receives eight beige sleighs weight

(and I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of the exceptions USED to follow the rule, but had their pronunciation change over time :ugeek: )

There's an online chart with a HUGE number of "exceptions" - but most of them really aren't true exceptions- they're words that end in e and have a suffix starting with i, or they follow c or are pronounced as a - or are foreign words. After you get rid of those, the exceptions are pretty few : )

So, 5 don't follow the rule and 6 do. That's not "so many" exceptions? Bwahaaha. You funny girl.

I like the rule, tho'. I always have to say it when i'm spelling things like believe, retrieve and weight. (Yep, use that second part, too!)

Well - that's out of the sample of 11 that the author *thought* didn't follow the rule!

OTOH - here's a "little" list of those that do:
