So, last night we were discussing the Biblical genealogies, and (long story short) I discovered that the Old Testament name Obed (as in the son of Ruth & Boaz) is the same as Ovid (as in classical ancient poetry!) Weird, huh? - I had NO idea it was the same name, having always pronounced both names according to their English spelling. |

That's one of the confusing things in the genealogies. It seems standardized spelling in English wasn't really a "thing" until after the 1940's!!!!!!!!! |

And, if your family was illiterate (as most were) the name's spelling might have changed every time they said it out loud to a public official who was writing it down! My cousin has been tracing our (paternal) genealogy, and it seems that the name changed like the sands on the seashore. |

I don't know how it's going to be with the weird way people are spelling names now. I think we should have Bob 1, Bob 2, Bob 3, etc, and Alice 1, Alice 2, .... |
