So, last night we were discussing the Biblical genealogies, and (long story short) I discovered that the Old Testament name Obed (as in the son of Ruth & Boaz) is the same as Ovid (as in classical ancient poetry!) :o

Weird, huh? - I had NO idea it was the same name, having always pronounced both names according to their English spelling.

That's one of the confusing things in the genealogies. It seems standardized spelling in English wasn't really a "thing" until after the 1940's!!!!!!!!!

And, if your family was illiterate (as most were) the name's spelling might have changed every time they said it out loud to a public official who was writing it down! My cousin has been tracing our (paternal) genealogy, and it seems that the name changed like the sands on the seashore. :?

I don't know how it's going to be with the weird way people are spelling names now. I think we should have Bob 1, Bob 2, Bob 3, etc, and Alice 1, Alice 2, ....
