DD found a statistic that FDR was the first President on TV. I googled it and found it- he was broadcast from the 1939 World's Fair. A newsreel footage was made - you can see what the very earliest TV's looked like, too (at the end). It's less than 2 minutes long. :geek:

Actually pretty good!!! :) My mom's parents had one of the very first tv's in the neighborhood and they just let the neighbors come in the door, sit down and watch, whether they were home or watching tv or not! LOL My grandfather was paid for a job with the tv!

Sounds fun!

I *think* my Mom was also on TV at this same World's Fair. She remembered seeing her first one, and having someone walk up to her with a microphone (on the air) and ask her what her name was. Her mind went blank from nerves - she couldn't remember her own name!

What I find fascinating is that Farnsworth invented the TV in 1927, but RCA battled with him in court over it for 17 years - until the patent expired. Then THEY produced the first commercial TV's - and made all the money. This footage was made in 1939 - so in those interim years when TVs weren't really available, and there wasn't a broadcast anyway! I had to explain to DD that while FDR was "on TV" - America WATCHED the TV on the newsreel!

ETA: (Here's the nice American Experience show on the topic
