Okay, found out it is in lieu of the flower bouquet. They are given a white stuffed tiger (korean symbol of something) and then the medal at a later ceremony along with a carved wooden thingy. Keepsakes.

Given that I'm allergic to many floral arrangements, I think it's a LOVELY idea!

(and, really, are stuffed animals any less macho than flowers?)
