I'm puzzled over an apparent Lyrics change.

All my life, I've heard "Offspring of the Virgin's Womb"

Today, for the first time, I heard "Offspring of the Favored One" (which seems to be trying to hide a miracle - IMO)

When & by whom was this change made? Any ideas? I googled it, and found several not-brand-new versions that also have this strange (tho definitely not in the original) wording.

Any thots?

I wouldn't know, I am listening to classic versions.

I found this: http://www.hymnsandcarolsofchristmas.com/Hymns_and_Carols/hark_the_herald_angels_sing.htm But, it just notes it in the footnotes. It does talk about several revisions, tho'.

Somewhere i saw a note about that "offspring of the favored one" being from The Message. Now, i can't find where i saw that. Wikipedia has "virgin's womb" listed as late as 1961, at least.

I spose it's not technically wrong as Mary WAS called highly favored.

A fine point you make! : )

I have NO problem with referring to the Virgin Mary as "Highly Favored!"

. . . .but I just don't want folks to avoid that whole virgin birth thing - especially in this age when so many are questioning it.

I liked that note from John Wesley near the bottom - asking subsequent generations not to mess with his brother's work. Guess nobody read that ;)
