So, I picked up Othello at the thrift store the other day. It was an old, beat up box with a pristine game inside.

I've never played it before, and DD is really enjoying it : )

I generally hate games (board or otherwise) but DD loves them I have to admit, this is way better than most.

Any fans out there?

Never played. Tell me about it. :)

My brother bought us one, many years ago. It's long gone, we used to replace missing pieces with cut out circles of construction paper, white and black pasted to one another. We do have a marble checkerboard on the coffee table. Makes me want to create the pieces for othello.

Well, here's the article
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reversi

What I like about it is - as the box says - it takes a minute to learn to play & a lifetime to master : )

I've never been interested in learning to play things like chess or backgammon. It just seems way to much of a hassle - given that I'm not fond of games. But, this one requires almost no learning curve to start, and I can play with DD and see her working on the logic skills necessary to beat me : )

It requires a fair amount of logical thinking - but without the hassles of most other games - if that makes sense.

The 50-cent or so price tag was an added plus.

And, it's really nice to see her ask to do a board game for entertainment in preference over screentime!

It didn't occur to me that the same board could be used - but that makes a lot of sense.

It seems like this sort of math manipulative would work for game pieces - maybe you have some lying around, or know a retired homeschooler who does : )

(we recently gave ours away!)
