Why or why not? "So what about me? I pay taxes. I don’t drink a lot or smoke. I try to eat healthy but that’s hard when you’ve been homeless for months. My heart still is giving me trouble on top of mental issues and other physical imbalances that I’d love to see a doctor about. I have a couple friends in the same boat. My girlfriend just lost her job due to no fault of her own and has lost her insurance because of it. She needs a knee surgery to fix her meniscus on top of a $255 a month bill just for medication so she doesn’t have seizures. If she doesn’t get that then she can’t work. I’d love for some of my taxes to go to healthcare for everyone because I know I’m not alone. And if it’s about choices then so what? We all choose to live our lives the way we want. Some of us will smoke and drink and face no ill effects. Some of us will be health conscious and die before we’re 30." |

This person isn't using the resources that exist. If the girlfriend is on an antiseizure medicine, then she DOES see a doctor. If she tells that doctor that she's indigent (or goes to the pharmaceutical company website) she can apply for -and get - free meds. Most communities have a free clinic - or sliding scale clinic for the very poor. If this guy is homeless as he alleges, he should easily qualify for free care. similarly with the knee surgery. So many folks want the government to *chase them down* with free care when they're not bothering to even apply for the free care that is already available to them. But, I suspect he's just not telling the truth. He pays taxes AND he's homeless? You don't have to pay taxes if you are under the poverty level (btdt) |

Before we can answer that question, we need to define our terms. What is a "right?" If something is a right, does that obligate the government to provide it, or does it mean the government can't stand in the way if I want to purchase it? I have the right to keep and bear arms, but the government isn't buying me guns or ammunition. |

There are already a lot of free resources out there that people do not take advantage of. These same people sit back and complain that they are too poor or whatever but take no initiative to do something about it. Going to any local hospital or clinic, and people can be well informed of the many services out there. My older sister easily makes half a mil a years as an attorney, but she wants our country to become a socialist country so "everyone" is guaranteed the "right" to free health care and other things. Simply put, she doesn't want to use her own money to take care of herself and wants the government to pay for everything. Geez! |

But, I do know American docs who do that, too - on grounds that recovery/rehab will be difficult or impossible following surgery. But to make it a national policy for ALL elective surgeries is dreadful. Truth is, anyone who can afford it goes private pay over there, anyway. |

And i think that's great - to have the CHOICE to go on national healthcare or private. And you're right! Many/most private companies will also give you stipulations. That's one reason i don't have healthcare. I want to go with Medishare but they charge quite a bit more if you're obese - which i am.
