They said 38,000 acres of wetlands had been developed surrounding Houston. These wetlands serve as sponges for rain. If you build on them and concrete them over the water has no where to go. This person advocated leaving coastal areas barren of habitations and only host visitors temporarily.

I was telling my mom, why do people even live right on the coast? Yeah, it's pretty, but you know it's dangerous. If only the city and developers would learn, so people wouldn't have to suffer. Let people visit and camp or whatever, just don't put a bunch of roads and buildings. Unless they can come up with a way to make the material absorbent or something.

How far inland does "the coast" go?

It should be how far a storm surge would go. It would be nice if the coasts were all cliffs.
