Yes. I never understood why people insist on using different names for grandma and grandpa (for the informal sense). I always called my grandmother, 'Grandma Anderson." I never would have been encouraged to call her Gigi or anything else. She would be appalled if I did. I know many women say that they are too young looking to be called grandma so they go by other "cutsie" names, but to me, that is just stupid. If you are grandma, you are a grandma, no matter how young or old you really are.

In Appalacia, it's not cutsie - that IS the name for Grandma & Grandpa ; ) I suppose other areas might have their colloquialisms. My Father's Mother was known as "Nanny" to all the family but us. Mom had us call her "Grandma" (I suspect she felt much the same as you : )

For Greeks, OTOH - there is ONE name for Grandma - Yiayia! There is NO deviation from that! So, DD has one "Yiayia" and one "Grandma" : )

I agree with you on the fear of aging thing! I get *mistaken* for Grandma occasionally by strangers - understandably - and it doesn't bother me a bit! To deny that you're middle aged - when you ARE - is silly! : )

My mom is Granny and my dad was Papa.

You wouldn't believe the people who are offended by my mom being called that!

My in-laws are the more formal grandma and grandpa to my kids.

I won't have my grandkids call me grandma, because it was used as a hurtful knickname by my cousins when I was a small child. So.. The name brings up bad memories. I have yet to decide what my grandkids will call me. (it won't be granny, either.)

Yeah - I think I'll just have my grandkids call me "Bambi!"

Just for the record, they misspelled ALL of the Greek names to call your grandparents. So do a little more research before you adopt one of those ;)

Yeah, that link was for ideas, not doctrine. ;) I just skimmed thru some of it. Bambi? LOL

My oldest grands call me "grandmother" at times like they're being proper but it's mostly grandma. One calls his other grandma Mimi, and one is Nana. One is French and is said frenchy - :P :P ! The youngest calls his Mimi, also, and there's another plain grandma. The only thing i really DON"T want to be called is Grammy. (Associations)

Interesting, but I got lost as to which nickname that is 'cutsie" that is actually a term used by the Appla? This just goes back to different parts of the US with different terms.

The Appalachian names I can pronounce (ALL my classmates called their grandparents that growing up!) but the spelling is not standardized:

It's something like
"Mahmaw"
and
"Pahpaw"

The first A is like the A in apple, but the second is like the a in autumn.

But, where the H is, there is a definite nasal sound that cannot be produced in writing - at least not in English ; )
