I had to pay the taxes on my car today. I don't ever take the paperwork out of the envelope, just take a peek at the amount.
At the tax office, I took the paperwork out and low and behold there is also a paper for the van I purchased 2 months ago in the same envelope!! It says the taxes for that are also due today. :o
I had no idea. I bought the van from my mom, and when we got the title switched over, I got a new tag but didn't have to pay any taxes then because they were paid. My mom has paid the taxes up until Dec of this year.
The lady at the tag office said "Oh well, it's yours now and your responsibile for paying them." I told her that wasn't the point. That they were already paid and if they are making me pay now, does my mom get a refund on what's overlapping from the time of the van purchase to Dec? (about 6 months of taxes).
She said no. I told her what a nice little racket they have going there. That's nearly double the taxes for the year on one vehicle.
ALSO I had to pay for my car AND for the van TODAY. Twice what I had planned to pay out today. I wasn't expecting to owe van taxes until Dec.

What do you mean by taxes?
you only pay taxes when you buy the car. ONCE.
then it is tags once a year and inspection.
but Taxes??? confused

Sorry about the birthday surprise, Tory : (

That's almost like being a little kid & getting shots every year for your birthday (our annual checkups are scheduled near birthdays)

Well.. it's taxes even if you are paying for the "tag" it's taxes on the vehicle. The check is made out the the tax commissioner so it's the same difference here.

Oh.. and then my mom brought over my gift.
It's a piece of luggage that my sister found in an apartment. It's one of those pull behind models and it would be great except there is a wheel missing.
Nothing like getting a used, broken gift.

Bummer. At least you found it out before you got stopped and got a ticket.

Yep, a tag is nothing more than a driving tax. And your driver's license is ANOTHER driving tax.

LOL, Anna! Maybe we should name more taxes. We are an incredibly overtaxed nation. :0)

Here in Texas we do not call it a tax.
Each year you get your car inspected. That is so your car is safe to drive. It is not a tax.
Each year you pay for your tags on your car, rather the sticker you replace each year. Suppose to pay to fix the road. Big Lie.
But if you get a car from someone else, like you (Tory) did from your mother, we just pay for the transfer of title. If the tags and inspection are current.
Now a dealer may have you pay that all over again , I do not know how they do it on used cars here in Texas.
Sorry you had to pay it again.
