I had to pay the taxes on my car today. I don't ever take the paperwork out of the envelope, just take a peek at the amount.
At the tax office, I took the paperwork out and low and behold there is also a paper for the van I purchased 2 months ago in the same envelope!! It says the taxes for that are also due today.
I had no idea. I bought the van from my mom, and when we got the title switched over, I got a new tag but didn't have to pay any taxes then because they were paid. My mom has paid the taxes up until Dec of this year.
The lady at the tag office said "Oh well, it's yours now and your responsibile for paying them." I told her that wasn't the point. That they were already paid and if they are making me pay now, does my mom get a refund on what's overlapping from the time of the van purchase to Dec? (about 6 months of taxes).
She said no. I told her what a nice little racket they have going there. That's nearly double the taxes for the year on one vehicle.
ALSO I had to pay for my car AND for the van TODAY. Twice what I had planned to pay out today. I wasn't expecting to owe van taxes until Dec.
