I have always learned "hola" as "hi" in Spanish. Most recently i was told that few Spanish places say hola! Instead they use buenos dias as a greeting. Is this your experience? Anyone can answer with their experience, of course! |

Hola is the informal, between family and friends. At church we say, buenos dias. Hola is also used on the phone. I have heard people answer the phone with, dirme, which is 'tell me' but more like saying, 'talk to me'. When we greet family it's always long O followed by a short -la. Dramatic. |
