I have always learned "hola" as "hi" in Spanish. Most recently i was told that few Spanish places say hola! Instead they use buenos dias as a greeting. Is this your experience?

Anyone can answer with their experience, of course!

Hola is the informal, between family and friends. At church we say, buenos dias. Hola is also used on the phone. I have heard people answer the phone with, dirme, which is 'tell me' but more like saying, 'talk to me'.

When we greet family it's always long O followed by a short -la. Dramatic.
