Have you heard of this technique for doing a floor? My husband did this in our kitchen over the last couple of days, while the kids and I were on vacation. I love it! You use the rolls of thick brown Kraft paper (you rip it into pieces and crumple it), some white glue/water mixed to apply it to the floor and then several layers of polyurethane over it all. We did a thin subfloor, too, because we'd ripped out tile and didn't have a smoother surface for putting it down.

Check out my public photo album at FB:

Here's the video we watched for the application process:

Total cost was under $100. I don't like the color of my cabinets or the color of the walls next to the flooring, so painting is now on my to-do list, too! (Or replacing the older cabinets.) So some would say the total cost is a bit over $100. ;)

This is really neat. Let us know how durable it is.

Will do! In reading several blogs, it sounds pretty durable. And if there IS a problem, you just rip, paste and polyurethane a little more. :)

I have seen this technique on-line but never knew anyone who did it -- till now! I love the look. It's very unique! Keep us posted on how it wears. :0)

Is it smooth? We've sanded and poly'd some wood projects, sometimes they are smooth, sometimes not. I'd worry that the floor isnt smooth and could catch sticky spills/stains and be hard to clean. My mom used to have an ornately grooved composite tile floor that was very difficult to keep clean, eventually ripped it out and replaced it with ceramic tile (my fav).

I love the warm tone.

As far as the cabinets, we had dark brown kitchen cabinets in our old house and we replace the doors and drawer faces with light oak...a lot cheaper than replacing the whole cabinet.

I've seen it done with wallpaper. Same idea except you don't have to crumple it. ;-) The polyurethane makes it as durable as a gym floor if you use enough layers.

I've always wanted to try it but dh says no. sigh
