Have you heard of this technique for doing a floor? My husband did this in our kitchen over the last couple of days, while the kids and I were on vacation. I love it! You use the rolls of thick brown Kraft paper (you rip it into pieces and crumple it), some white glue/water mixed to apply it to the floor and then several layers of polyurethane over it all. We did a thin subfloor, too, because we'd ripped out tile and didn't have a smoother surface for putting it down.

http://www.anoregoncottage.com/2010/08/ ... od-floors/Total cost was under $100. I don't like the color of my cabinets or the color of the walls next to the flooring, so painting is now on my to-do list, too! (Or replacing the older cabinets.) So some would say the total cost is a bit over $100.
