Saturday , there were three woman sitting at the end of our isle, one seat away from us.
One said she didnot know how her son was going to do in what we call Junior College, (community college), because he does not know how to study.
How do these kids get out of high school, on a wing and a prayer. That should be required to teach them that.
DD found out during her first summer session that the kids in her class did not know how to study. Or just did not do it.
She does know how to study . She has to have quiet.
I pitty some of these kids that are trying to get an education so they can get a sort of decent job. :(

Some kids never have to really in high school because they can listen in class or skim the material enough to pass tests. I studied a lot in high school, but when I went to college I realized my study strategy was incomplete compared to what I needed for the number of classes I took each time, and the amount of material that needed to be covered in some classes. Most kids figure it out after the first test or two.

They do not teach study skills or writing skills in high school. My son used to help all his buddies in the Air force study and they asked him how he learned to study. He said, "my mom taught me"

When my son was taking classes at our CC everyone was *Required* to take a study skills class before they could get their degree. When dd started college and now ds, they were both suprised at the lack of study skills. One of the things they observed and heard was that the kids in high school were spoon fed the info and frequently given cheat sheets or open book tests. If they didn't pass the test they were allowed to re take it. With all of that, there's no wonder so many kids flunk out of college.

I know a couple of geniuses who never learned to study in High School simply because no material was ever presented that they didn't already know.

Some people just don't have to study till college or grad school.

They don't teach you anything valuable for higher education or the real world in HS. A lot of kids don't study because they just cheat and copy off the few people who did study. When I was in HS, I studied and worked hard on my assignments. People in class that I never even talked to would ask to see my paper so they could copy off it and they didn't like me because I always said "No". No way were they getting credit for my hard work.

The people I knew didn't cheat - they just didn't have to even show up to ace the test. Really annoying to us regular folk! ; )

I went to hs with a guy that has a photographic memory. He'd read through the text once, read through his notes once if he didn't think he remembered everything he wrote and that was about it. He was an A student. I didn't know about the photographic memory part until our first class reunion and we a few of us were talking and somehow it came out in the conversation. Great for him, not as fair feeling for me. Wah!!
