Most young people don't make enough to pay all the bills. This is a time for him to figure out how to do so, even if it means roommates, extra jobs, less fun... It is a good thing. Keep a smile on and a positive word for him as he moves out and makes his way in the world. :)

Maybe this will be just the thing he needs to help him "grow up." And maybe it will give you a little relief too.....one less to create mess and conflict. Maybe he will realize just how good he had it at home! I hope this will be a good thing for everyone.

Hmmm. When I was 18 and moved out I had a fulltime job, went to college fulltime and paid all my bills. I had two roommates, they were sisters. I was always broke, though. Rode my bicycle a lot because I didnt have money for gas (late 70's when the price of gas doubled on us the first time). So it is possible. My recreations were the apartment hot tub/pool to relax after a long day and going to play basketball with my roommates ESL class on the weekends. Sometimes I'd splurge and rent skates at the park.

I remember eating toast and coffee for breakfast, getting an orange or apple in the college vending machine for a quarter, and splurging for a cheeseburger and chocolate shake ($1.26 total at the time). My roommates sometimes left me dinner, they worked nights, so I didnt see them a lot.

Oh, I did manage to save up $1500 in those two years.

Yeah that is when Carter was in office and gas went up to 75 cents a gallon. Got me an old Toyota then,

Yay! This is good news. As a mom, you will worry, but for him it's a big step in the right direction.
I remember that first move... I was broke but I learned!!
I ate noodles OR a peanut butter sandwich for dinner eat night. I couldnt' afford both.
I'd have free soup that my job provided for it's employees every day for lunch. Sometimes I'd buy a pack of crackers to go with the soup but I'd only 2 of the crackers. They'd last me 3 days that way, lol!
They are happy memories though. I'd go to the park every day after work. That was my only recreation because there was no money for movies, eating out, etc. I didn't mind though because I was an "adult" cough cough... (I felt like a little scared kid!!) lol!
