A while back we discussed what we would do if we won the lottery. I have a follow-up question:

If you had a friend who won a large lottery jackpot, and asked *you* to tithe their winnings for them, what charitable or religious organizations or individuals or causes would you consider the best to distribute the money to?

I'd give a bunch of it to the Salvation Army. :0)

I'd tithe it to our church denomination's missionary fund or our local conference Chilldren's home and youth camps.

I would support Yezlalem Minch, an organization in Ethiopia that we visited when we were there to adopt our youngest two children. They do amazing work feeding the poor and teaching mothers how to support themselves. The director has an incredible heart for the Lord and her fellow Ethiopians.

I'd tithe it to parishes in our diocese that are planning to or are building a new church building. I'd focus on churches that don't already have an Orthodox church within an hour or two of their community.

Alternately (or at the same time -- depends on the size of the lotto winnings, LOL), I'd fund the salaries of priests for mission churches that don't have their own priest due to finances.

Children's homes would be number one on my list. "Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world." James 1:27

My number two priority would probably then be to establish scholarships for folks to attend Scripturally sound preaching schools (and of course your definition of that and mine may vary). "How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?" Romans 10:14
