I've been involved in a funeral procession recently and seen a couple as well, one today for a fallen policeman in my county. I was curious to see how people from around the nation deal with them. In my area (southeastern NC) everyone pulls over to the side of the road and waits till the procession stops, even on a double lane road. We do it as a sign of respect for the family and for the recently deceased. How does your part of the county handle funeral processions, if they do at all.

For regular people , pull over to the side of the road , usually wait for the hearse to go by. Some people wait till the procession goes by , but I believe you legally only have to wait till the hearse goes by. Have not had to deal with any of that lately.

Ours is usually the same. There are always some who keep on going, but most people pull over. Ours have a police escort, so it makes it much more visable from a distance so people have time to pull over.

State law requires yielding right-of-way. Many drivers additionally pull to the side of the road and wait for the procession to pass (I believe that was the law when I was young).

how is it handled on a four lane non divided road. Here even the people in the two lanes headed toward the procession stop. Do your laws apply only to two lane roads or do they also apply to four lane roads?

I think the protocol is very similar to that for a schoobus or for a police car with sirens running. If the road is a very wide one, it becomes dangerous to pull to the side, and goodness knows, you don't want extra business for the funeral home!

I don't know the rules in my head (I googled the actual law- and saw that it only *requires* yielding right-of-way), but when we were going to Mom's internment, we rode on an interstate highway as well as country and town roads. On the highway, it was business as usual (except it is very bad manners to cut into the procession line and keep the cars from following each other). In town, we went thru lights while other cars waited. Out in the country, on the two lane highway, almost everyone coming toward us pulled off the road for us.

We do this exactly as you describe Alyce!

We pull over and wait in Arkansas. Growing up near Chicago that was not the common practice.
