Often, when we do reading drill, Little One practices putting the words in sentences - whether I want her to or not.

Since she is still learning English, she often sees the word differently from those of us who know the language well. If she uses "for" in a sentence, she may well say, "The little boy turned four on his birthday." Lots of opportunity for explaining how words look alike or sound alike, but have different meanings.

The other day, we had a surprising one. We had the word was "torch" - how do you use "torch" in a sentence?

"Do not torch-er your Mother!" :o

(not that I've ever said that. really. ;)

actually torch-er is spelled differently although you say it the same. It's spelled torture, so your sentence is good if that's the word you are looking for. If you just want to use the word torch. You could say: Lisa is carrying a torch to help her see in the dark, or Lisa torched the house because she likes to set fire to things.

The thing is, she was dead-serious - not intending to joke at all!
