analyze & question anything/everything that comes across their paths.

I don't want them to blindly follow anyone or anything.

A question is not grounds for punishment.

Injustice on the other hand, IMO, is evil.....and sometimes will require defiance and rebellion.

The officer had dd's address and cell phone number from the ticket. That is information they require now.

I defer to Neesa's superior wisdom & eloquence on this one.

(maybe I'll just let her comment for me from now on - she does so well : )

And, officers always run the license plate when they pull someone over (generally before the car even stops) and they always have access to the address of the driver - nothing disturbing about him knowing that info.

Think of the Biblical guidance to those who love God in relation to their governments (especially in relation to the book of Jeremiah, and the writings of St. Paul)- it was always to be submissive, etc. And, I cannot think of a single government in question that was NOT totalitarian and immoral. Christians must always obey a government unless ordered to do something that conflicts with Christianity.

We can defend our freedoms in the legal system as Briva has recently done (you go girl!), but defiance, and rebelliousness - IMO anyway - don't fit.

Amen & Amen. Whether or not the cop was right or not, a soft answer turns away wrath. While your ds was respectful in his question, it definitely "rubbed" the officer in the wrong direction. As some have already suggested, be humble and remain silent or answer respectfully and move on.

Yes, it is spooky that he went to the home, that struck me as odd. How did he know how to call? I guess he got the phone number for the ticket he wrote?
ALSO... This raises a very good point that we need to teach our dc that are new drivers. WHAT to do when pulled over?? How to act, etc.
It's a way different age than when we first learned to drive.
I'm not sure if I've ever specifically told my dc what to do (or what NOT to do), if they get stopped.
In small towns like this one, the officers actually look for new drivers. It's not too hard to know who just got a license. They often will park just down the road from our church on Wed. nights waiting for the youth to leave.

They used to do that also at our previous church. Like they do not have time to get the real speeders that cause wrecks, etc.

It is just not a good thing for your kids to be developing an adversarial attitude with the local police officers. They may be coming across this officer many times in passing over the years. Your son was not acting in his own best interest by being a pain in the @@@.
Once when I was a teen I thought it was odd when I was walking home from an after school event in daylight and a police officer asked me what I was doing out , where was I going, and then said go home, it's not safe for you to be out here. I told my Dad about it and found out a girl I knew had been raped on the rail road tracks right near where I was walking just the day before.
Recently a family member was pulled over by the police for making a left turn where it was marked no left turn, onto the hwy. The police man that pulled him over was pretty ticked off. Well, there have been terrible accidents on that corner with fatalities and guess who gets to deal with that. The police.

It's silly to be so preoccupied with "what can they ask me" and so forth. Tell the kids be respectful, expect the best, and you have nothing to worry about if you are not doing anything wrong. For the most part.
I agree about having your son pay for half the ticket.

Here, yes they can tell how fast you are going, because they have radar guns to check your speed.

Let it go. Your children do not need to be developing an adversarial attitude toward police officers. Instead of focusing on his imperfect attitude let them focus on being more respectful.

Wow, what a day!! And yes, your DD should have duct tape for her brother from now on! LOL
I'm glad the officer fixed his wrong doing. Now, it would be great if your DS apologized to the officer for his tone of voice. As a Christian, your son is supposed to show respect to those in authority. And trust me, I wasprobably just like your DS as a teenager!

Kinda reminds me when one of the young'uns in our family complained to me, "The cops circle our house like it was a doughnut shop!"

I seem to recall my response was something to the effect of "Good! Keep ya out of trouble!" ;)

Reading this after the fact and glad it all worked out and the police officer was responsible for his actions and that the kids learned a lesson on how to deal with authorities from this situation.
