Ds is doing the Police Explorers boot camp this week, and he asked what an officer could do by law when he pulls someone over. Turns out that he can question anyone in the car, but anyone in the car can get out and walk away. Then he can't question them. Interesting, huh?

That is interesting.

Oh, that is anyone except the driver. I asked what would happen if someone jumped out of the car and ran into the woods. It seems like that would LOOK pretty incriminating, but the officer can't follow unless he knows who the person is and has reason to suspect them. I guess he could ask the driver who it was, but the driver could always say, "I'm not sure."

All's well that ends well. One thing is odd to me: I thought when an officer started writing a ticket, that was it. It's that way here, anyway. My son's friend (Roger Leggewie!) is in police officer school and they're taught that they make a decision about a warning or a ticket before even approaching the car. That way they're presumably not persuaded by begging or pleading.

That your daughter's officer was able to tear up the ticket is weird to me. I wonder if he wrote her a real one at all.

I agree with the folks who said that we have no way of knowing who the officer had met prior to your kids. He may well have been acting out. I'm glad he apologized and did the right thing. I'd like to see your son do the same.

My daughter has told this story to various locals, and the thing they think is strange is that he asked for her phone #. This guy was in his 40's but she had the feeling he was "checking her out." Yikes. Who knows? It's a done deal though. :0)
Incidentally, I think ds feels pretty bad about it upon reflection, so that's good.

If that's the case Martha, I'd be inclined to call the police station to ask if requesting phone numbers is a typical procedure. If it's not, they might want to hear about it.

It makes me want to tell my dd to give our home phone, not her cell, if she is ever in that situation!

They ask for phone numbers here. I didn't find it all strange.
