in our district. I asked what type of handwriting they teach in the district so that I teach Victoria what they will be teaching. She asked me to call her. I just had a simple question. Geeee All I needed was a simple answer. I am going to take the opportunity to ask a lot of questions about the Magnet schools for G andT and how they are going to handle her severe allergies and their outbreaks etc.

You could probably go onto the school site and get some answers there.

They will probably tell you to NOT teach her yourself. My ex MIL is a teacher and she complains ALL the time about the kids that come in already knowing how to write.
IT seems they don't want to "re teach" and correct the "wrong way" we are teaching them at home....

Linda, there was no info on line.

I talked to another person and they said that a lot of the school's have stopped teaching handwriting as they don't have time!!! I hope that is not the case, but I have a feeling that is what she is going to say. Gee. You think they would want kids coming in knowing something

That is what I used on Breanne. Use what you want. Why can't you teach her prek and kindergarten which ever she is in now?

If you are not going to send her to the school you are asking questions of they probably will not give out info.

All of Texas uses that curriculum. They are having a huge teacher seminar about it in February. I just wanted to be sure that they weren't teaching cursive or D'Nealian which was way off base from what I am doing.

Now that my youngest dd is a sophomore, I notice her handwriting has stayed the same :) She used those Spencerian workbooks, kind of passively, a few lines everyday. She went through all the workbooks and it really worked. She is the only one of my kids that has nice handwriting. My son is a lefty and got his start in ps, so today he even prints his signature :( My oldest dd did take calligraphy and went she tries she can write nicely, too.

Teachers don't usually catch a student making their letters wrong. If they "look" right then it's ok. They DON'T have time to watch each student make each letter - altho' they SHOULD make that a priority as it is a foundational skill! Really, in the long run, does it matter which style they learn? It should just flow from one letter to the next. Kids also don't learn handwriting anymore because it isn't used anymore. We're always told to PRINT everything except our signature.

I think it should be taught as an art like calligraphy (starting with plain ol' cursive). It should be something you learn to decipher, also, so you can read Great-grandma's love letters to Great-grandpa someday. ;-)
