Already in the United States, another recessive trait, blue eyes, has grown far less common. A 2002 study by the epidemiologists Mark Grant and Diane Lauderdale found that only 1 in 6 non-Hispanic white Americans has blue eyes, down from more than half of the U.S. white population being blue-eyed just 100 years ago.

A team of scientists has tracked down a genetic mutation that leads to blue eyes. The mutation occurred between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago. Before then, there were no blue eyes. "Originally, we all had brown eyes," said Hans Eiberg from the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the ..."The question really is, 'Why did we go from having nobody on Earth with blue eyes 10,000 years ago to having 20 or 40 percent of Europeans having blue eyes now?" Hawks said. "This gene does something good for people. It makes them have more kids."

I don't know about all that but my family is doing its share of providing blue eyes to the world. My parents and all my 6 siblings have blue eyes. All 5 of my kids have blue eyes, my grandson has blue eyes, most of my nieces and nephews have blue eyes. My work here is done. ;)

Funny. there were no blue eyed people 10,000 years ago POSSIBLY because there were no PEOPLE 10k years ago!

Why don't these so-called scientists find something to do that will help humanity?

Why did they specify non-hispanic whites. My dh would qualify as a hispanic white, blonde, freckles and green eyes. His dad had grey blue eyes and 6 of his 19 grandkids have the same grey blue eyes, both my girls do. My dad has green eyes, I have hazel.

I also remember 'scientists' classifying red hair as a mutation. I always thought redhaired folks were from outer space anyway, lol.

I think green eyes are the rare ones. Not hazel, but GREEN. : ) And, of course, *violet* like Taylor's.

One of our family had eyes that regularly changed color - blue, green, grey, brown.

Another has one blue & one brown eye.
