On a different note...

Did you know that the Federal government was still sending out veterans pension checks from the Civil War all the way up to 2003? Gertrude Grubb married John Janeway, a former officer in the 14th Illinois cavalry, in 1927. She was 18 and he was 81. John Janeway died in 1937, and Gertrude lived in their cabin for nearly 70 years after his death. As a widow of a former Union officer, she received a $70 pension check from the Federal government every two months until her death in 2003. Gertrude Janeway was the last known widow of a Union Civil War veteran, and the entitlements paid as a result of her husband’s service spanned three centuries.

Fascinating article, Stacy - thanks for sharing! The bit about the widow is pretty stunning, too!

There were some pretty incredible age differences in these marriages!

Here's another fascinating one I encountered today after Stacy got me interested in the topic. This lady just passed away (as reported by Fox), and was given full Confederate honors. Her father was a slave who saved his master's life in the war.
