I thought I'd post this very nice write up on my Patron Saint, St. Anna, since her Feast Day is tomorrow. She was the Grandmother of Jesus.

Many years, Anna! Happy name day.

In the vigil service last night for today's feast, it seems there was a quote from St. Nikolai Velimirovich saying something like "They only had one daughter, but, oh! What a daughter. They only had one grandson, but oh! What a grandson." I really liked it.

Joyous feast!

I thought Mary and Joseph had more children, more sons. How could they only have one grandson??

I am so confused by this. 8?

Oh, and happy name day Anna!!

Pam, I'll PM you so as not to take over Anna's lovely celebratory thread with a theological discussion, LOL. (Unless she wants to tackle it here!!). :)

The short answer: The Virgin Mary had only one Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. St. Joseph, by some accounts, was previously married and had other children by his first wife (Most notably St. Salome & St. James), but they would not have been the Grandchildren of Sts. Joachim and Anna, but rather Step-Grandchildren (and, quite possibly older than their daughter, as St. Joseph is said to have been quite old when he was betrothed to the Virgin Mary).

We believe that the Virgin Mary was Ever-Virgin. This is a nice article for anyone interested in more details of the Church's understanding on this http://www.protomartyr.org/mary.html
