Post subject:  Age of accountability.... or... ?

We had an interesting conversation in Bible study tonight about when someone dies that is very young (from conception to the age of accountability), or has never heard the gospel, etc, do they go to Heaven?

We discussed whether Ps 51:5 means we are born sinful or prone to sin. We discussed being "blotted out" of the Book of Life.

It was quite a lively conversation. Unfortunately, it was off the topic at hand and nobody was (scripturally) ready to give chapter and verse for their input, including me. :P

Personally, I think it's none of our business. (and I'm not meaning to be snarky here - sorry if I'm not delicate at expressing things)

Rather like when as a toddler, DD gave me driving advice. She didn't understand how to do my job - or what was required.

Our job is to do OUR best to make sure our kids make it to heaven, and to share the Gospel with others. Judgment Day (as my dear friend likes to put it) is "above my pay grade."

(We DO Baptize and Commune infants in our Church - we don't have a concept of "too young for God")

I DO love this Biblical passage that is somewhat on topic:

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Wisdom+4%3A7-15&version=RSV

But the righteous man, though he die early, will be at rest.
8
For old age is not honored for length of time,
nor measured by number of years;
9
but understanding is gray hair for men,
and a blameless life is ripe old age.

10
There was one who pleased God and was loved by him,
and while living among sinners he was taken up.
11
He was caught up lest evil change his understanding
or guile deceive his soul.
12
For the fascination of wickedness obscures what is good,
and roving desire perverts the innocent mind.
13
Being perfected in a short time, he fulfilled long years;
14
for his soul was pleasing to the Lord,
therefore he took him quickly from the midst of wickedness.
15
Yet the peoples saw and did not understand,
nor take such a thing to heart,
that God’s grace and mercy are with his elect,
and he watches over his holy ones.

What is this from? What is "Wisdom" - the book?

Yup.

It's one of the "Intertestamental" books (sometimes called "Deuterocanonical" or "Apocryphal" books).

It's well worth reading - you'll finding vaguely similar to Proverbs & Ecclesiastes : )

I agree that there are things that are "above our pay grade" and i'm ok with that. But if our Father took all that "time" to give us the Bible to read and study, i think it would be kind of an insult to God to say it's not for us to know and leave it at that. I'm not looking for someone else's ideas about whether or not there's an age requirement or some other way out of personal salvation - i'm looking for scripture knowledge. :)

Oh - yeah - for sure I agree! 8-)

I'm just not sure that the Bible answers this particular question in a formulaic way. I've seen a lot of folks *create* neat little formulae. That's what disturbs me when this topic comes up. Splicing together different verses or phrases from different passages is a VERY risky proposition.

(As one memorable sermon illustration goes "And Judas went out and hanged himself." . . . . "Now go and do ye likewise" (!) Bad splice! :ugeek: )

Absolutely - where the Bible GIVES answers - I want to know them! :)
