Just read the customary article for this date. I see that according to this obviously pagan ritual, we will have 6 more weeks of winter (what winter? It was 80 in central TX yesterday!) It was towards the bottom of the article,

"The lead-up to the announcement was raucous with singing and dancing in front of a cheering crowd. The tradition stems from Candlemas, an ancient European celebration midway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox."

Really? Candlemas, an ancient celebration, just randomly placed between seasons? This is the first time in my life that a groundhog offended me :( instead of lifting Christ up, they are lifting groundhog.

And now for the rest of the (true) story

Great link : )

Yes - "randomly" placed ; )

It never ceases to amaze me how much attention people give to Groundhog's Day while ignoring the Feast of Christ on this day.

Sadly, we're home from Church today because DD has a fever : (

Can you give me a synopsis of Candlemas? I know nothing about it.

As for winter - we got it. ;) It's 3 degrees this morning, had more than a foot of snow - still on the ground.

It's in the link!

It's the day we remember that Jesus was brought to the Temple at 40 days after his Birth (that would be NOW) and Blessed by St. Simeon (Mine Eyes have seen Thy Salvation . . . Now Letest Thou Thy Servant Depart in Peace) and St. Anna, the Prophetess.

A friend of mine has this art print depicting St. Simeon holding the promised Messiah

BTW - "Candlemas" as a term is foreign to me. I always have to think, "Now WHICH holiday do the British mean when they say "Candlemas"?"

In Greek Orthodox circles it's known as "Hpapante" (ee-PAH-pahn-tee) or simply "The Presentation of Christ"
