Can you defend your position?

Of course. Trinitarian belief is central to Christianity. Otherwise, you're simply a monotheist of some other Faith.

Hey! I said to defend your position! :ugeek: The word "trinity" isn't even found in the Bible.

You didn't say I SHOULD defend my position - you asked if I COULD!

It is true, the word Trinity isn't in the Bible. But, I'm not Sola Scriptura. Actually, that's one of the MANY reasons I'm not Sola Scriptura!

The Trinity is mentioned in the Bible without the word - two very obvious spots are the Transfiguration and the Baptism of Christ (not coincidentally, these are the two HUGE stained-glass windows at my Church : ) If you read those two passages, you will clearly see each of the Persons of the Holy Trinity acting - all at the same time : )

I could go on for pages - but I'd be rather re-inventing the wheel, wouldn't I? There are ample resources out there.

To start simply:
Like this

or this

For a free, online classic:

If it is a topic that one REALLY wants to spend time on, then Metropolitan John Zizioulas' Book, Being as Communion is well, one of the best books in the whole world on any topic!

Thanks for all that. I suppose that's why I come here with these questions. I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

I didn't realize that you were wanting info - if you need more resources (or fewer, better organized resources) for some specific application on the topic - let me know. I'll see if I can help.

Seriously, the Zizioulas book is one of my favorite books of all time - it's amazing! But, be warned, it's dense - not the kind of book you read in the tub or on the beach (unless you're looking for a BAD sunburn ; )

I've formed most of my ideas of what the Word says and when someone comes along to challenge my thinking I don't always remember WHY I believe it. Some things I know I studied and came to conclusions. But others I'm not sure if I just absorbed it from church talk or study.

I recently came across a website that said the Trinity was heresy and, before I got too far into it, I wanted to remember why I believe what I believe. No worries. The more I got into it the more I saw it was a straw man argument anyway. But now I do want to refresh my memory. I think what you've given me is enuf ... for now.

We absolutely believe in the Holy Trinity. Every prayer we pray ends with "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (never just "in Jesus' name"). As Anna described, the concept of the Trinity has always been present. From "in Our image" in Genesis, to "the Lord our God is one [united] Lord" in Deuteronomy to the Baptism of Christ, Holy Transfiguration and Jesus telling the Disciples to baptize "in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit" in the New Testament to St. Ignatius saying Christians needed to give obedience to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to the Council of Nicaea defending it in 325 AD (and putting it in the church's foundational Creed, calling Christ "very God of very God") to St. Patrick describing the Trinity with a shamrock in the 5th century to the feast of Holy Pentecost (aka "The Feast of the Holy Trinity") being established in the 10th century and on and on.

The history is there. It's an early, foundational doctrine.

I agree with what's been said already. I have a Bible study that describes the Trinity and has all the Bible verses for it and everything. It gives examples of where God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are used interchangeably. Like in one verse, it says God lives in us and in another verse, it says the Holy Spirit lives in us. The baptism of Jesus, is probably the most obvious revelation of the Trinity, to me.

And, I do value the great preachers of old, and none of them would have ever denied the trinity. It's always been a core doctrine of Christianity. I'm glad you realized the deceptiveness of that website. I was pulled into a website years ago, that taught that basically everything was heresy. They were right about some of the things, but their whole basis was very "off" and I later realized that it was very misguided and just plain wrong. It's one of the reasons I am so wary of the sources of things I read and I try to stick to people/websites that I feel have proven trustworthy.
