Today is the day we commemorated St. Andrew the apostle, who is my youngest son's patron saint. We just finished reading the story of his life, which blessed me so much!! I didn't know a lot of this about him, so thought I'd share.

Thanks for posting that : )

I read a couple of things about him yesterday, but your post was certainly the most detailed I've seen - a lot of stuff I didn't know in there! : )

We have a couple of kids named Andreas in the family, too!

Nov 30 is my mom's birthday, she was named after him, Andrea. All her siblings were named after a saint on their birth day, except the youngest. He was baptized Raul instead of after St. Cyprian.

Very interesting. Where did all that information come from. Are there Bible verses about all that or is it from historical writings?

Historical writings. The apostles lived for some time after Christ ascended and the church was growing, and it was united under their leadership, so people knew who they were and where they went and what they did, etc. These things were talked about and eventually it got written down.

My 75 year old dad has been writing his life story the last few years, telling stories from back when he was a teenager and in elementary school even. The level of detail that he remembers is amazing! He was there, it was important to him, he knew and loved the people he's writing about. It's like that, I guess.

ETA - This is a book in which the stories of the lives of the apostles, post-ascension, have been collected. It's a pretty neat read, seeing which direction around the globe the Holy Spirit led them.

Another note on Christian History - many of these memories are carried in the *places* where these things happen. When I went to see the place where St. Lazarus served as a Bishop after Jesus raised him from the dead, a the place where St. Paul traveled, and the place where the disciples of St. Paul lived and taught - and in those places people tell stories that have been handed down since that time, they come to life in a new way.

For instance, in the town where St. Lazarus served, people will tell you that he was known for not smiling or joking - as he understood the seriousness of this life and the gravity of Eternity - having been there. These towns remember their Saints as if they had been there just in their Grandmother's time. That's a certain kind of human memory of a Spiritual reality that comes with visiting a place.

I was especially touched to hear that on Strait St in Damascus, where St. Paul received back his sight - there is still a Church! A Bishop I know had traveled there, and gave me a little Icon from there - and it meant a lot to me.
