Ouch?
I really cannot relate to this at all. He's using a traditionally anti-Christian platform (Salon) to bash God & his parents. I really doubt that his version of the story is true, but regardless, he gives no *content* to argue with. He does not say what he converted to, what "Evangelical" means as he sees it, he tells of no adult interaction with Christianity. There's a Rosary at the Top of the page, but I can find no mention of Catholicism. Exactly what is he alleging about God, and what did he convert *to*? He never says. He simply relates one childhood experience.
It seems to me the classic straw man argument. I allege that my parents an error in judgment once (all parents have), therefore I made this decision about God (Who is Perfect).
Is he saying that scare tactics aren't the best thing with little kids? Okay - - - but (this is where the straw man comes in) - - - WHO uses scare tactics with little kids? Mainstream Evangelicals? No. Child Evangelism Fellowship/ Good News Clubs? No (not to say that if you read everything they ever published, you wouldn't find any mention of Hell - but it's NOT their focus)
So, really, I just cannot relate to his story. Bashing God & his parents - well, he broke 2 Commandments there in one article. But what that has to do with Evangelical Christianity & its Truth? I don't see the link.
